Agios Prokopios is Naxos' most celebrated beach and a regular on lists of the best beaches in Greece. A kilometre and a half of golden, coarse sand that never sticks, deep blue Blue Flag water, and one of the very few certified beaches on the island. The bay is naturally sheltered from the meltemi winds, staying calm even when other beaches turn wavy, and it faces west: sunsets here linger to the very last glow.
The central stretch is organised, with sunbeds, beach bars and tavernas right behind the sand, while towards the ends the crowds thin out until it is just you, the sand and the blue.
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna share the same southwest coastline: where one beach ends, the next begins, and beyond them stretches Plaka. Behind the northern dunes hides Kokkini Limni, the Red Lake, a former salt pan that now hosts herons resting on their migration between Europe and Africa. Keep your eyes open early in the morning.
Thanks to its orientation, the bay stays protected from the meltemi: when the wind whips up waves elsewhere, the sea here usually stays glassy calm.
The beach takes its name from the small whitewashed chapel of Saint Prokopios at its northern edge, which celebrates its feast day every year on 8 July.
Yes, for most of its length. The central stretch has sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and tavernas, while towards the ends there are free sections for those who prefer a towel on the sand.
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are neighbouring beaches on the same coastline. From Coast of Dreams the beach is just 250 m away: a few minutes on foot along the shore, by bicycle (we offer rental), or on the local bus that serves the beach line in summer.
Early morning or late afternoon in peak months, when the light is at its best and the crowds thinner. In May, June and September the beach is comfortable all day.
There are car parks near the beach, but in July and August they fill early. If you are staying in Agia Anna, walking or cycling is often the easiest option.
